Supported Scanners
Readiris supports both Photoshop “plug-in” and Twain compatible scanners. (Twain support was new for version 6.06.) In other words, each scanner for which a Photoshop “plug-in” or Twain driver is available is supported!
To perform OCR on faxes or use currently unsupported scanners, image files can be used. Readiris allows the import of images in many formats - FlashPix, GIF, JPEG, MacPaint, Photoshop, PICT, PNG, QuickDraw GX, QuickTime, Silicon Graphics, Targa, TIFF and Windows bitmap (BMP).
How to Install Your Scanner under Readiris
1. Install the scanner drivers using the CD-ROM (or set of diskettes) that comes with your scanner. Doing so will also install the Photoshop “plug-in” or Twain module on your computer.
If necessary, study the installation instructions that accompany your scanner carefully to ensure that this driver is installed correctly.
2. Verify if the scanner operates correctly with any scanning application other than Readiris.
3. If your scanner uses a Photoshop “plug-in”, locate it on your hard disk and copy it to the Readiris folder, or create an alias for the “plug-in” in the Readiris folder. (This step is not required for Twain drivers.)
4. Select your scanner in Readiris with the “Scanner” pop-up menu in the “Preferences” dialog accessible from the “Edit” menu. (That shouldn't be too hard: usually your scanner will be the only one listed in the “Scanner” pop-up.)
Using the Photoshop “Plug-in”or Twain driver
Be sure that you maintain a scanning resolution of 300 dpi. Know that this may not be the default setting of your “plug-in” or Twain module!
When you are using a Twain driver and Readiris displays the message “Invalid picture”, you have to select another image depth inside the Twain driver.
A word about the HP OfficeJet G series
Twain support
It is mandatory to select the scanner's Twain source inside Readiris with the user interface enabled. When you select the HP OfficeJet G scanner under Readiris without the Twain user interface enabled, Readiris will not function properly.
Know that the user interface of all Twain based scanners is enabled by default. In other words, your HP OfficeJet G scanner will operate correctly unless you change the standard settings.
(To select the scanner model, go to the "Preferences" command under the "Edit" menu of Readiris.)
Generating full color images
When a scanner from the HP OfficeJet G series is used, 24-bit color image can be transmitted to Readiris. In that case, it is only afterwards that this large image can be scaled down. (Whether this happens depends on the color depth as selected with the "Preferences" command under the "Edit" menu.)
As full color images are handled, the required free RAM memory is 32 MB, not 22 MB; 40 MB RAM is recommended! (Readiris warns you each time there is insufficient RAM memory available to execute a specific operation.)

To avoid this phenomenon, you can ask your Twain based scanner interface not to generate true color images.
Processing Large Images - Solving Memory Issues
Color, greyscale and black-and-white images are supported on an equal basis. Readiris allows the import of images in many formats - FlashPix, GIF, JPEG, MacPaint, Photoshop, PICT, PNG, QuickDraw GX, QuickTime, Silicon Graphics, Targa, TIFF and Windows bitmap (BMP).
To limit the memory requirements, Readiris converts 24-bit color images (16 million colors) to 16-bit color images (65,536 colors) by default.
It takes the "Preferences" command under the "Edit" menu to inhibit this conversion or on the contrary reduce the color depth further to 8-bit (256 colors or grey scale).
When you allow 24-bit color images, the required free RAM memory increases from 22 MB to 32 MB - with 40 MB RAM recommended!
Readiris warns you each time there is insufficient RAM memory available to execute a specific operation.
Assigning More Memory to Readiris
Assigning more memory to an application is done in the following way:
1. Select the application - not an alias - in the Finder by clicking it once.
2. Select the option “Memory” under the command “Get Info” of the Finder’s “File” menu. You can also use the shortcut Command-I to do so.
3. Increase the preferred memory size to 40 MB. This value is set at 22 MB by default by the Readiris installer.
Managing Virtual Memory
As you may not dispose of a computer with a very extensive RAM memory, we’ll explain how you can increase your computer’s virtual memory.
1. Go to the “Apple” menu in the Finder and select the control panel “Memory”.
2. Enable virtual memory if necessary.
3. Increase the section of your hard disk which will be used as virtual memory.
4. Restart your computer to ensure that the new settings take effect.
Choosing the Right Format
Readiris has numerous output capabilities: you can copy the result to the clipboard, save the result in a text file, export the recognized document promptly to a target application and even save the result in a text file and send the recognized document directly to an application.
Which format you should use - ASCII, RTF or HTML - depends on the type of application. Be aware that you cannot send documents in any format to any target application.
To recognize tables and send them to Microsoft Excel, you should select the HMTL format, not the RTF format!
To send recognized documents to AppleWorks 5.0, use the default format ASCII. AppleWorks does not read HTML pages. RTF documents may or may not be opened by AppleWorks. Due to the lack of proper support of the HMTL and RTF support by AppleWorks 5.0, Readiris cannot “work around” this problem.
User Documentation
The Readiris software is supplied with electronic manuals in multiple languages.
It takes the Adobe Acrobat Reader software to consult this electronic documentation. Licences for this software are supplied on the Readiris CD-ROM.
With the Acrobat Reader, you can consult the manuals on-screen and print out a copy, should you wish a paper copy of the manual.
Feel free to install the Acrobat Reader software, its use is free of charge!
The Installers can be found in the folder "Acrobat Reader Installers" on the Readiris CD-ROM.
